What is an Endowment Fund?

An endowment is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. Assets are invested with a portion of the value of the fund made available each year to support the fund’s purpose. Earnings in excess of this distribution are used to build the fund’s market value. In this way, an endowment fund can grow and provide support for it’s designated purpose in perpetuity.

The Foundation for Dane County Parks Endowment:

  • Created to provide a permanent perpetual source of revenue and sustaining support to the Dane County Parks friends groups and over 4,000 volunteer stewards of our county’s most precious natural resources.
  • Endowment funds are designed to support special projects and programs, educational opportunities, interpretation and volunteerism to a growing and diverse population.
  • The endowment is held and managed by the Madison Community Foundation, a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) public charity.
  • Contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
  • The Foundation for Dane County Parks is a partner in developing Accessible Fishing and Boating Improvements throughout the Dane County Park system to enhance access for all ages and abilities.

The Dane County Parks System:

  • Draws over 2.5 million visitors annually.
  • Manages more than 12,000 acres of land with 25 recreation parks, 29 natural resource areas, wildlife areas, cultural and historical sites, forests, trails, and the Lussier Family Heritage Center.
  • Offers over 100 miles of trails including bicycle, equestrian and cross-country ski trails.
  • Protects and improves water quality and provides recreational access to our waters.
  • Supports area businesses by attracting visitors, supporting hundreds of events each year and working with local communities.
