Event Description

Seed Cleaning—Hammer and Fanning Mill Volunteer Workdays

Sign up required: Sign up at https://signup.com/go/xnWCYMi

Lend a hand in Dane County Park’s native seed shed to help process the fall seed harvest with our Natural Lands Management staff. As seed comes in from the field, help is needed to turn hundreds of pounds of seed heads into hundreds of pounds of clean seed that will be spread in restoration sites across the county. The hammer mill step in the cleaning process helps to release seed from capsules and break apart seed clusters. The fanning mill will be used to seperate clean seed from chaff. No prior experience is needed. All tools and training will be provided. Participants will need to stand on a step stool and tolerate some noise and dust. Hearing protection and dust masks will be provided. Space is limited to 4-6 individuals per shift and registration is required. If you can no longer attend, please pull your name off the list on Signup.com or contact Rhea or Lars ahead of time. We have many interested volunteers who will be able to fill an empty spot.

COVID-19 Guidelines:  Masks must be worn at all times while indoors and while unable to keep at least 6' distance between people. Do not attend if experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms.

If weather allows we will be trying to process the seed outdoors to limit time spent indoors. Dress appropriately for the weather.
