Baer Socha Conservancy -- Invasive Tree and Brush Removal Workday

Event Dates

  • Monday, 01/17/2022 8:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Event Description

Baer Socha Conservancy is a new 140 acre Dane County Park located between Marshall and Waterloo, just north of Hwy 19 on Cherry Lane. Highlights of the park are multiple drumlins and the winding course of the Maunesha River.

Active restoration of the remnant prairie on the south drumlin began in 2020. This winter we will continue cutting invasive shrubs and early successional trees on the periphery of the open 2 acre prairie. Please arrive by 8:50 am as we would like to be ready to start 9:00 am sharp. The restoration area is a 5-10 walk with snow on the ground. We will have a sled for hauling gear, as well as loppers, hand saw and herbicide. In case of cancellation due to weather, a notification will be made via email and phone to participants who have signed up. We are looking for 2 sawyers and 2-4 people for hauling and applying herbicide. Contact Peter Marshall for additional information: 651-328-9895

What to bring:

Volunteers are needed to help remove these invasives using a variety of tools and to help haul and stack brush in piles to be burned this winter. Participants should be ready to work in winter conditions and should dress for the weather (thick socks, layers, etc.) in clothes you don't mind working in and that are made of non-synthetic materials that won’t be melted by falling embers as we will likely be burning brush piles if conditions permit. Sturdy, waterproof shoes/ boots are highly recommended. Bring drinking water and work gloves.

Tools:

Tools such as loppers and hand saws will be provided, or volunteers can bring their own if they'd like. Other tools and needed materials will be provided. If volunteers have their own chainsaws and chainsaw-specific PPE, they are welcome to chainsaw at these workdays but must be familiar with using a saw and can work independently and safely. Chainsaw operators must be chainsaw-certified with the county - meaning they've been through a chainsaw safety training and have a signed Chainsaw Waiver and Volunteer Registration Form on file with Dane County Parks.
